'Howell’s Battle’
Frank Howell flew numerous uneventful sorties in the early part of the Battle of Britian but his luck was about to change as he wrote in his logbook on August 13th 1940: "Sqn scramble. I missed B Flt and climbed to 18,000'. Intercepted about 54 Ju 87s. Many escort fighters seemed to be engaged five miles behind. Shot down two 87s. Sqn score 13 destroyed and many unconfirmed’.
For his gallantry during the intense combats of the summer of 1940, on October 25th Frank Howell was awarded the DFC
