Escort Lightning - Lieutenant Richard Loehnert flies his Lockheed P-38J Lightning, 42-67916, named California Cutie On Escort duty high above a formation of 9th Air Force Martin B-26 Marauders. The Marauders were tasked with attacking communications and tacticle targets in France in support of the invasion forces. They operated at medium level with fighter Escorts such as that provided by the 20th fighter groups 55th Fighter Squadron as shown here.
