‘Check Six’
On August 15 1940 during the Battle of Britain, Major Adolph “Dolfo” Galland was the Gruppenkommandeur
of III./Jagdgeschwader 26 (JG 26) based at Caffiers flying the Bf 109E, while New Zealander F/Lt “Al” Deere was a Spitfire Mk 1 pilot with 54 Squadron.
The two met over the channel on that day, the fight progressing to low level, with Deere eventually forced to bail out of his badly damaged
aircraft between Folkestone and Dover. At the time, Deere had shot down 17 enemy aircraft, this dogfight was Galland’s 22 victory.
