‘Palm Sunday Massacre’
The 57th Fighter Group gained fame for its many notable ‘firsts’ but its most successful mission was the Palm Sunday massacre on April 18th 1943. As the Luftwaffe evacuated troops from Tunisia 48 P40’s caught a large formation of Ju52’s escaping off the coast of Cape Bon. Capt James G Curl of the 66fs/57th lead the mission. 76 enemy aircraft were confirmed as destroyed.
