‘Attack on the Artemis Pitta’
B-26 Marauders of 14 Squadron strike against shipping in Melos harbour, Adamos Bay, Melos on Feb 21, 1943.
A’ Flight led by Lewis in FK370 and accompanied by Fg Off R W Lapthorne in FK151 and Plt Off. Clarke-Hall in FK142 prepared to lead the attack
These first aircraft only faced minimal enemy fire, all dropped their torpedoes but only the Lewis managed to hit the 1,300ton Artemis Pitta near the stern which violently exploded thanks to aviation fuel being carried.
